PICASSO’S LADIES: JEWELLERY BY WENDY RAMSHAW

Picasso, one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century, and his painted records of his wives, mistresses and friends had long inspired Wendy Ramshaw. The sheer beauty of the women and the full range of emotions expressed in these paintings provided the impetus for Ramshaw to design one or more jewels for each of the 66 portraits of ‘Picasso’s Ladies’ illustrated in this book. In this publication the collection is presented in its entirety alongside Picasso’s paintings, the source of stimulus. In an unusual approach the artist gives in her notes an insight into her working process. She reveals to us the personal messages of each painting which led to a number of amazing designs and how her choice of stones either reflect or go against the colours on the paintings. Four authors have illuminated various aspects of what are undoubtedly some of the most intellectually complex and aesthetically accomplished jewels

DAVID WATKINS: ARTIST IN JEWELLERY

This book represents the first retrospective in print on the fascinating work of the English artist in jewellery David Watkins, who started out as a jazz pianist and sculptor but has been designing jewellery since the 1960s. At the outset of his career, he designed miniature works of sculpture. Later he began producing outsize wearable objects. Watkins is increasingly preoccupied with the interrelationship of the body and jewellery; his pieces of jewellery are becoming autonomous art objects in their own right.
Drawing on a wealth of photographs, drawings and statements made by the artist himself, the book provides invaluable insights into the way David Watkins works.

DAVID WATKINS WENDY RAMSHAW: A LIFE’S PARTNERSHIP

“Graham Hughes’ longstanding friendship with the artists has given us a book rich in anecdote and personal detail, offering both lay reader and design historian a uniquely human face to this shared artistic journey and life. Hughes’ own distinguished career as a writer and historian of jewellery sharpens this personal appreciation into a succinct appraisal of their achievements in the context of wider art and design over their forty-year careers. The wealth of images drawn from the family album – from professional photographs of extraordinary jewels and large scale works to incidental snapshots and exhibition displays – provide rich material for casual readers and archivists alike. Graham Hughes and the artists are to be congratulated on making this substantial and beautifully illustrated recollection available to us all” – Amanda Game, 2009
